The muscular tube connecting the throat with the stomach is called an esophagus. About 8 inches long, the esophagus passes through diaphragm before connecting to the stomach. The food that you swallow passes through the esophagus before it begins the digestive process in the stomach.

Stomach is a muscular sac located on the left-hand side of the upper abdomen. It secrets many enzymes and acids to enhance the process of digestion. Being an integral part of the GI tract, the health and adequate functioning of esophagus and stomach are essential.

WHAT ESOPHAGEAL TREATMENT AND GASTRIC SURGERIES HELP IN TREATING THE PATIENT?

Whether it is GERD, Achalasia Cardia, or any other ailment of the esophagus and the stomach, we conduct thorough procedures to help restore the patient’s quality of life.

Esophagus & Gastric Surgery includes the following:

1. LAPAROSCOPIC HELLER’S MYOTOMY FOR ACHALASIA CARDIA

chalasia cardia is an uncommon type of disorder that affects the nerves in the esophagus and makes swallowing food and liquid difficult. The laparoscopic procedure of Heller’s Myotomy is a minimally-invasive procedure that will open the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve between the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach). Myotomy means cutting the thicker lower end of the esophagus and the upper end of the stomach to alleviate the symptoms of achalasia cardia.

2. LAPAROSCOPIC FUNDOPLICATION FOR GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE

Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when the stomach acids back up into the esophagus and irritate the lining of the organ. It can worsen in old age and often patients suffer from terrible chest pain and burning sensation. To treat the gastroesophageal reflux disease, the doctor will conduct a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. The upper section of the stomach is wrapped around the lower section of the esophagus to stop the acid and relieve the patient of symptoms.

3. LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY – BARIATRIC SURGERY FOR WEIGHT LOSS

The other name of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is gastric sleeve surgery. The doctor will reduce the size of the stomach so that patients are able to eat only smaller quantities of food at a time. It will ensure reduced calorie intake and thus, enable weight loss in bariatric patients.

4. SURGERY FOR CORROSIVE STRICTURES OF ESOPHAGUS (ES)

ES or corrosive strictures of the esophagus is the narrowing of the esophagus leading to difficulty in swallowing. Corrosive esophageal stricture can be caused by many reasons including GERD, esophagitis and even injuries during an endoscope. A surgery for strictures of esophagus is Esophagocoloplasty/Substernal Colonic Bypass. It is a complicated procedure that includes removing the affected portion of the esophagus and replacing it with a part of the colon.

5. SURGERY FOR CORROSIVE STRICTURES OF STOMACH

Like esophageal strictures, corrosive strictures or injuries of the stomach can occur due to several reasons. The treatment includes the following surgeries:

  • Distal Gastrectomy
  • Gastrojejunostomy
  • Total Gastrectomy with Esophago-Jejunal pouch anastomosis

6. CANCER OF THE ESOPHAGUS

Esophageal cancer can occur in the linings of the organ and spread to other parts of the body as well. So, it is essential to treat the cancer and ensure the well-being of the patient. Often, the doctor will perform an esophagectomy as a part of the treatment for esophageal cancer. There are many other types of surgeries that the doctor may choose depending on the staging of the cancer.

7. GASTRIC CANCER OR CANCER OF THE STOMACH

Gastric cancers or gastric adenocarcinomas can be divided into two categories: Cancers of gastric cardia (Often occurring in the upper region of the stomach near the esophagus) and non-cardia gastric cancers (occurring in the mid and distal part of the stomach).

  • Radical (D2) Distal Gastrectomy – Also called antrectomy, it removes the lower part of the stomach that is affected by corrosive strictures. The doctor will attach the remaining part to the opening of the small intestine.
  • Radical (D2) Total Gastrectomy – If the cancer has spread to the entire stomach and its adjacent organs, the doctor may have to perform a total gastrectomy to remove the stomach, nearby lymph nodes, parts of the small intestine and sections of the esophagus.

Surgery of the esophagus and stomach is complicated and an expert GI surgeon is essential to ensure speedy recovery of the patient. With Dr. Jay Chokshi’s incredible experience of esophageal surgeries and gastric procedures, you can trust him for the improved health and well-being of the patient.
